The White Cliffs of Dover
I sat in the compartment with the others until 1.15 am when we reached
Dijon. The train stopped a few
minutes at Dijon and I went on to the platform for a minute. As it was
so stuffy in the compartment,
I stayed standing in the corridor for fresh air until dawn which was at
about 4.30 am. Then I returned
to the compartment, where the others were getting up and opening the
window. Thereafter it was
pleasanter. We were in the last relay for breakfast which was at 8.15
am.
Most of the morning we stood in the corridor reaching Calais at about
11 am, where we boarded the
boat which sailed at 1.15 pm. It was a lovely sunny day and the
crossing was very pleasant. The coast
of France gradually receded and the white cliffs of over came into
view.
At the Customs examination in Folkestone we declared the things which
we had bought and luckily were
charged no duty.
he train journey from Folkestone to Victoria was the last lap of our
long journey home.
We were met on Victoria Station by Mr. and Mrs. Butcher. Margaret's
parents and my Aunt Violet.
