Missing you already

They said colour was a barrier,
The pox marks on your skin,
Your husband, your daughter,
The distance to the shore.
All those walls are thin,
Love broke through,
But still no win.
Events conspired against us,
Before we were both born.
Distance no obstacle,
Money merely paper,
Language only talk,
Cast, culture, couldn't check us.
But time, time,
Finished us in the end.
I could hold you for a hundred years,
And be no nearer.
We'll always fall that final hurdle,
And always I'll be,
Behind you.
