On July 24th 1991, on the island of Kos in Greece, Ben Needham at the age of 21 months disappeared off the face of the earth. Simply was no more.
He was last seen playing outside, very near the doorway of his grandparents' farmhouse. The exact time of Ben’s disappearance is not known, but he was gone at 2:30 pm.
The police were not notified straight away as no one suspected he had been taken; after searching the area and calling out to him for over an hour, Ben's grandmother returned to the family's caravan. Ben's grandfather also looked for him in his automobile, with no positive results.
After a search, the grandparents assumed that Stephen, Ben's uncle, had taken the child with him. They drove to his apartment only to find out that Stephen had no knowledge as of Ben's whereabouts.
This year marks the 18th year of his disappearance. Eighteen years not knowing if your child is dead, alive, being used in the sex industry, taken by gypsies or stolen by a childless couple.
Eighteen years of torment.
Overwhelming guilt. And unfailing hope that he may return.
When Ben went missing the Greek police occupied there time usefully.
They interrogated the Needham family. No airports or docks were informed of Ben's disappearance until three days later.
An officer initially told Stephen and Ben's grandfather to meet them at the docks to check on the passenger cars heading to Athens in the 3 am ferry. The police officer never showed up.
There was a sighting some days later by a member of staff at a shop counter, who reported Ben was in the company of an older boy. This older boy has never been traced. It was the evening Ben had gone missing.
The Greek police were accused by Ben's family of being very slow to follow up new leads. Lack of communication between the British police and Greek police simply delayed leads and caused confusion. Resources were not used. This was a baby of 21 months of age. The family spent thousands of pounds desperately chasing new leads in the hope of finding their Son.
Between 1991-2, there had been over 300 sightings of Ben.........even DNA hair samples on boys of the same age. All proved fruitless.
My Space has become an ever increasing global chain. As has the internet.
Someone somewhere knows where that child is. Or suspects not all is right. Or knows what has become of him. If every person on this site was aware of this tragic story maybe it would bring Ben home.
Ben is not the only missing child in this world. Tragically, there are many more. But we are fast becoming a society that sympathizes on the day and may shed a tear, but then forgets.
I have not.
Imagine if your child had been missing for 18 years. Would you not shout at the world for help?
I know sure as fuck I'd be screaming. AT EVERYONE
