It sat there glistening
Pink, red raw, naked
One sad eye bulged
And seemed to gaze at the morning sun
As commuters trudged past
Grim, relentless
Bits of chewing gum and fag butts surrounded it
The remains of a neck trailed onto a yellow line
But only I stopped and leaned in
To see it
Clearly
Sheep’s head
Dead head
No body
No legs
Grotesque and bloodied
A strange look of pride
On its dead grinning face
So out of place
Not even packed in ice
Or plastic
Labelled
Priced
Sold as a deal
Fantastic
It looked ashamed
Embarrassed to be there
To be so naked
No fur
No hair
I wanted to reach out, touch it
But didn’t dare
So I just kept walking
And in the evening
It wasn’t there.
