Proposal poem

I was hiding quietly in my single life
In a perpetual state of too-many-pints
All jaded sarcasm and predictable cynicism
None of it seemed right
60 first dates under my belt
No dating app I hadn't tried
Let down, put down, all hope shot to hell
And the armour went up inside
Then in a dimly lit pub in Vauxhall
Early one April night
You walked in, golden-hooped, bold as brass
Silver-haired in the evening light
The stand-up comedy got forgotten
But the night went on and on
Salsa in the background, another pub, a wine bar
You singing and dancing to that song
'You know when you know', they say
And I've always rolled my eyes
I didn't think it could be this way
But you've proved it wasn't a lie.
You wake up happy each morning
Make me laugh and smile all day
Go hysterical without warning
I love it when we get that way
I could natter at you incessantly all day, every day
For at least a thousand years
And there’d still be more to say
More talking, more laughter, more tears
The way you are with your family
With Barby and with Margy
The way you are with the children you teach
The way you are with me
You’ve got the biggest heart my love
You’re so thoughtful, strong and kind
You’ve opened up a whole new life for me
And I can’t believe you’re mine
Three words on repeat don't seem enough
As we've said so many times
But I love you darling and I'm asking today -
Will you be my wife?
