The Boat
By chant

We were watching
the street elves performing
an alfresco gig
all in a circle
I threw a charm in the river
we were rocked in a reed boat
on the log-strewn river
where the fishermen consort
with crocodiles
and follow their hearts
the sky’s dark body
was inked with stars
we had left our bodies
by the river
where the wicked cannot pass
near where your tomb is
I think we were glad
we were standing in a circle
round the street elves
battered guitars, in beanies
the street elves performed
people were clapping in time
like a small child you were clapping
I had never seen such a light
like a white bird
made of many faces and hands.
I had made you a boat
out of reeds
to sail on the river;
look, here it is.
