Starless Night

When you were a child
and needing comfort,
I told you that God
stole a twinkle from your eyes
to make the brightest star.
You believed me then
and that is when your smile was born.
You try to hide now,
behind its radiance;
a light so intense that it is blinding.
And you think you can place a veil
over my understanding.
But tonight a tear has escaped
from a starless sky
and cleared my vision;
I can see
the sadness in your eyes
eclipsing the moon.
