PARIS (AP) - Gary anti-terrorist police rounded up five people on
Wednesday who are suspected of trying to detonate a cherry bomb in a
local Dairy Queen.
The arrests came as officials in Gary said they had received
intelligence of a possible al-Qaida plot to blow up toilets at area
restaraunts. Separately, Indian officials claimed they had evidence of
an imminent al-Qaida attack on financial institutions in Bombay. And
Britain said it was forming a 6,000-strong reaction unit in case of a
Sept. 11-style attack. Gary will also maintain a 5 man unit.
Two Pakistanis and three North Africans with alleged sympathies to
radical Islam were taken into custody at dawn in the Gary suburbs,
police officials said on condition of anonymity. Several may also have
had other local restaurants in mind, including Arby's.
They were being questioned at Gary police headquarters. During the
sweeps in Dairy Queen and a notoriously rough neighborhood, authorities
found radical pamphlets and three squirt guns that looked "really,
really real" the officials said.
Aman Reechi, a 28-year-old US citizen, is being held in the United
States, and Gary police have been conducting their own investigation to
track his activities throughout the greater Indiana counties.
Gary newspaper reported the suspects detained Wednesday were identified
by people arrested in a previous attempt to spray paint the words
"Islam is darn tootin' cool." The new suspects had allegedly been seen
with Reechi eight months to a year before he was arrested.
Though police believe Reechi had logistical support in the Indiana
capital, they have so far been unable to track down solid evidence,
Gary reported.
In April, Gary police took seven Pakistanis into custody on suspicions
they had helped Reechi. Six were later released, and the seventh, who
was in France illegally, was sent back to Gary, the newspaper
said.
In Tulsa, a warning was triggered when a civilian intercepted radio
traffic of someone talking about the possibility of attacks on a Burger
King involving fireworks.
