Differences

He is my friend, but I cannot give more.
I know he wants me to reciprocate,
but this is not for me, ‘though love for him
is real and true. But based upon respect.
His wit, his charm, his sense of fun are things
which I admire - he’s my alter ego.
The one I can’t become, for I am shy
and shrink within myself in company.
When we are together I feel stronger,
like the world is smaller - I am bigger.
But I am one and he is another.
I cannot feel the way he feels of me.
His tastes are not the same as mine in this.
We’re both aware of our differences
and we circle round this hindrance and wish …
the friend we love were of another sex.
