Escape

Time to escape – detach
from life. . . . Float
in a void of
no dimensions.
My body, undetectable,
spreads across the universe.
I am only consciousness
far away
from the world of strife.
No blood soaked streets;
murder; war. No
corrupting politicians.
No stabs in my back.
No pain from spiteful
speech. Words, sharp
as canine teeth.
Starlight returns, struggling
through the thickness
of the curtains.
Photons land on my retina.
Familiar shapes appear.
The wardrobe transforms.
A black silhouette within
deep shadow.
Life returns with the light,
and I wonder if I am dead
when I escape to total peace
for forty seconds every night.
I think, What if one day
the light does not return?

The relief of the sleeping
The relief of the sleeping 'float' is so authentic Ed and really like how you've reversed the return of the light to be yet another of life's little jabs. Dark yet comforting somehow.

So well described. Sometimes
So well described. Sometimes I wish I could be there forever, but there would not be any being I'm guessing if the light didn't return, we'd just be gone. Loved your poem, and the face I see in the picture - looking down.
