When He Said

When he said.....
When he said he lived in Crawley thair wa' sadness in his voice,
And wistful woe sae clearly shaw'd that hud thair been a choice
He'd be cutting rugs an' catching stars, leapin' thru' hoops o'
flame
And frolicking wi' heathen fairyfolk, bringing shame 'pon his sweet
name.
Alas! Thair rests he yet, downtrodden wi' ennui,
When in his eyes and in his hert, A ken he cannae dree
The humdrum ways and doledrum days, the hames o' greyin' brick
When shores o' hue and fancy lie, a wee flight fae Gatwick!
And aw the while tae see a smile fae a laddie, sweet as he,
Tae yonder fly if he'd say Aye, if he'd ma answer gie.
But if he'll nae spread his wings, then he'll have made his
choice,
And when he said he lived in Crawley, thair wa' sadness in his
voice.
A ken he cannae dree - I know he can't stand it
