In This Dark Tomb

In this dark tomb
lie bones and rags,
people who died
under Yellow Jack flags,
who died of love
and other ills
coughs and sniffles,
a winter that kills.
In this dark tomb
are buried kings,
foolish ‘til death
that contagion brings,
wise in repose,
dumb in demise,
sage and silent
at the end of lies.
In this dark tomb,
a candle glows,
the hope of light
all darkness knows,
it has an end,
sunrise’s bloom;
dawn’s aurora
dispelling our gloom.
