Stiffen up our sinews,
or at least our upper lips,
show them some fabled sang-froid
as we embark on foreign trips.
Breathless behind Hannay,
hopscotching the Middle-East;
flirt with Hilda Von Einem,
outwit some Turkish beast.
Follow Bulldog Drummond
along doubtful moral routes
persuing Irma Petersen
and the shine of her lace-up boots.
We'll polish Templar's halo -
in the casino, on dit 'bonne chance' -
wonder at the sultry women
admiring his insouci-ance.
Treasure these guilty pleasures,
for soon they'll disappear;
Sixpence a throw at the jumble,
when the library's closed next year.
