Xmas drivel

There was once a tiny ant who lived in a gigantic
colony&;#8230;of ants, in Wimbledon Common. He wasn't like the other
ants in his colony for one simple reason, he was red. All his friends,
were black ants. In fact he was the only red ant in the whole colony.
To tell the truth, he was the only red ant that any of the colony had
ever seen. On the whole everyant treated him as they would any other
ant, when he had been a young ant he had had the mickey taken out of
him for being different, but now he was older, ants excepted him. Most
days, Red, as he was known to his friends, didn't even think of his
colour and so life went on.
Then one day close to Christmas when all the smaller ants were hopping
around on their six little legs with excitement, the trouble started.
One of the old ants came back to the colony with a tale of ambush and
attack, of how he had been set upon in the outer reaches by three evil
ants, and they were RED!! It wasn't long before the Red was called
before the colony queen, who asked all manner of questions about who
these other red ants were and did Red now why they had attacked one of
her workers. Suspicions rose in the Colony, and nothing seemed the same
for Red.
The next day as snow flakes twisted a faltered falling to the ground
another ambush was set, this time six black ants were set upon by
twenty or thirty red ants. Only this time, only one black ant
returned. The queen was fuming, she knew that her colony was at threat.
She decided, after council with the colony elders, to raise a balck ant
army to put a stop to the red ant threat.
Red had overheard what was happening in the colony, and maybe due to
his unique position in the colony, being the only red ant he decided to
act, he thought that if he could find the red ant colony who was
attacking his friends, then he might be able to avert the impending
antics. He put on his little red rucksack and set off. For three days,
with the snow falling heavily on the intrepid little ant he battled on
in the direction of the ambushes. On the fourth day he was freezing, in
this weather, Red, like the rest of his colony would normally be
underground, he thought that soon he would have to turn back, when on
the cold wind he heard the sound of a horn.
From nowhere hundreds of red ants appeared, and there was a general
chatter of curiosity. One of the ants, obviously a senior one,
approached him and asked who he was. When he told them that he was Red
from the black ant colony, there was a renewed chatter, Red thought he
could detect more venom this time. The Senior red ant ordered Red to be
blindfolded and so began his journey into the unknown.
Sometime later he found himself blindfolded but stationery, he could
sense, even blindfolded , he was underground. Then his blindfold was
taken off, in front of him sat the red ant Queen. She interrogated him
mercilessly, asking question about the black ants, who he was, why he
was living with the enemy, was he a traitor and so on. Red answered
calmly and honestly, after all, he was used to suspicion and doubt and
he felt no more threatened here then he had when he was with the black
ants. Red explain that the black ants had never hurt him and that they
were peaceful ants. The red Queen told Red that they never believed
there were such a thing as black ants until recently. But ancient
stories told of how the army of black ants had swept down on the red
ant colony, killing every red ant they found. Red thought of his black
ant friends and the army that was being raised now. Eventually the
Queen said she also wanted only peace, and that red and black ants
should live together as Red had done. And that Red should go back and
make her wishes known.
Red scurried back as fast as he could to the black ant colony and he
was nearly to late. The black Queen had amassed a huge army. He spoke
to the black ant Queen and explained that the only reason the Red ants
had attacked was because of some silly ancient myth. The black ant
Queen was suspicious but didn't want a war any more than the red ant
Queen and so sent Red back with a truce and an invitation to her colony
to all the red ants for a massive Christmas Celebration of peace.
The army of black ants then set about making the preparations for the
big feast, and Red, who was quite tired by now went to fetch the red
ants. On Christmas day the red ants finally arrived and the two Queens
got on wonderfully, although the black ant Queen was very envious of
the red Queen's fabulous red hair and war nearly broke out again over
the cr?me brulee, but it didn't, and every ant partied hard well into
boxing day.
Red, who was not much of a drinker really, sat reading the truce,
pleased about the carnage he had prevented . The piece of paper he held
in front of him was the best Christmas present he could think of, a
document entitled anti-apartheid.
