The End?

Beyond the gates, a whole world was out there waiting for us. Just me and Charlie, hand in hand, setting out for who knows what. Freedom had finally come to us and I didn’t want to be anywhere else.
“Are you sure about this?” He looked at me and I could tell it was as much as a question for me as it was for him.
I didn’t know if I was sure about it, I just knew it was what I really wanted, and that I was sure about him. Looking up, I kissed him on the cheek, like he did the first time we met.
“I’ll always follow you,” I squeezed his hand to steady myself and then with the smile that I fell in love with, he led me away from the only home I’ve ever known. Before I knew it, the community was so far behind me that when I looked back for one last glance, all I could see was the faint light of the fire that was still burning.
The unknown lay ahead of me, my best friend walked beside me and the past lay in ruins behind me.
I am without name, home or family. And yet, I have never felt more myself than in this moment with just Charlie and the open wilderness.
