According to Yahoo Correspondent Serena Balientus, Jeopardy host Ken Jennings found it necessarry to apologize.
"A week after taking over temporary hosting duties from Mayim Bialik, Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings is feeling right at home on the beloved quiz show. So much so, in fact, that he's now gotten used to cracking punny jokes left and right.
In particular, viewers saw Ken's sense of humor come out on Monday's episode when returning Jeopardy! champion Andrew He chose the “National Geographic Ocean: A Global Odyssey” category for $800. The Double Jeopardy clue read, “A very brave cleaner shrimp gets a meal of parasites and dead skin from the mouth of one of these scary predators.”
Without skipping a beat, contestant Jeff Meyers buzzed in first and said, “What is an eel?” Ken then asked him to be more specific and Jeff replied, “Electric eel?” But it still wasn’t correct. After neither Andrew nor Molly Karol came up with the right answer, Ken revealed the right answer, moray eel, using a bit of word play.
“As Dean Martin might’ve said, ‘That’s Amore,’” Ken quipped."
My question is why the need to apologize? Puns are shreds of wit now placed in the category of Dad jokes. I'm a Dad, not only a Dad but a grand dad and I see no reason to apologize for my jokes and most assuredly not my puns.
I am an active listener with a wide vocabulary. I'm also intuitional and process my intitions through my feelings which means that I think out loud and the pun arrives without warning and surprises even me with its perception and fanciful connection between different words or of a word's different senses.
Some people greet every pun with a groan as if it were an Aunt Rose fart (for which by the way, Aunt Rose never apologized). I have learned through experience that the contempt following a good pun is a sign of sheepish docility mixed with a wolfish desire to seem superior. Puns are good, bad or meh. I think Jennings' pun is a good one maybe even a great one. Why would he need to apologize for that to those who lack the wit to make them unaware of the difference between good, bad or ugly.
If it's good, admit it's good...if it's bad admit it's bad...if it's ugly; it's ugly.
