The highlight of every active day is the walk we take, my love and I.
She has the more purposeful of strides, mine is more meandering.
She looks like she knows where she's going, I look like I'm trying to guess.
She likes the hills. She likes the cardio. She likes the heartbeat.
I prefer the flatlands to the relief of my hips, my knees and thighs.
I catch up for awhile and we talk. Our pace is timed for conversation.
Sometimes we pass a cat that answers us back when we meow together.
Sometimes it feels as if we are the only two people alive in Carolina.
We're not in the forrest or the desert or on top of Old Smokey
Yet we are surrounded by mostly silence and stillness.
We imagine where the people are and what they are doing
Mostly we talk about our children and we are as proud as concerned.
After a couple miles ( we are of a certain age), it's time to head home.
We make it to the porch just in the nick of my radiated bladder time.
I return to the porch and join my love on our cushions as the wind blows.
We congratulate one another on the distance we have travelled together.
