You need to understand that I had no idea. Though I'm not sure it
would've made any difference. It was my sister. "No idea" was her way.
She counted on it. And when I walked into her apartment, I hadn't seen
her for eleven years. It's a good thing I had no idea, too. If I had, I
would have slapped her clean across her goddamn perfect face. Little
sister or not, I would have made sure it stung.
Let me tell you something. When I walked into that apartment, I already
knew she was dying. The doctors had said so and, anyway, any idiot
could see it. I was there because I'd just been notified, as they say,
and I did my duty and came right away. That sounds bad, doesn't it?
Look, I wasn't just doing my duty. I did not know.
I did not know.
I flew down from a good life into something people talk about on talk
shows. I used to like those shows, until they became me.
Goddamn her.
