She checked the telephone again ' still no message. She had waited over an hour now and was getting really annoyed. Where could he be? It was all about to happen and he wasn't here yet. James had promised that he would be here with her when she did this.
She had been here in this exact same spot twice before. Her visions had given her part of the story but today the final piece of the jigsaw was to be revealed. On one occasion she had seen him be attacked on the top street and watched him stumbling towards the bridge. The second time had been the final moments of his life where he had fallen heavily on the track with the train coming in to the station. Now it was time to witness the missing link, the real truth of what happened.
The clock on the platform read 5.30; it was beginning to get light, any minute now she would see him approaching from the left side of the bridge¦there he was!¦ but this time he was running away from two people. They had followed him here. The police had said that he had been in a fight, streets away and stumbled to the bridge but that wasn't so. The smell of alcohol lingered on the morning breeze and glass was heard smashing as a bottle was broken on the wall. He could be heard screaming, pleading for his life as their mindless torture continued.
She wanted to go to him; she could feel every inch of his pain. Who were they? Without knowing, his ghost could never be laid to rest. She looked up to see him being pushed from the bridge; it'd been no accident. He hit the tracks with a deafening thud.
The smell of burning flesh was overwhelming and made her cough in disgust. The sound of the train could be heard in the distance but this was matched in volume by the laughter of the men above her. She tried to make out the face of the second man, the unidentified accomplice to her brother's murder. She strained every inch of her eye to gain some insight. He was frighteningly familiar, yet she couldn't bring herself to acknowledge who it was.
"James!
Her body shook as she realised the devastating mistake she had made. She raised her hands to avert her eyes from the truth. The top of the stairs was just ahead, just get there and all will be fine. She was now seconds away but in her hurry she misjudged a step and crashed to the ground. In an instant she was caught and hoisted up to the top. With relief she turned, desperate to convey her thanks to this stranger; it was James.
They were completely alone. Saying nothing, she pushed him and watched him crash down to the floor. She watched him dazed and disorientated wander onto the track smiling at the sound of a train approaching.
