The Sky

I lie down on the grass and feel the damp on my back. The sun is high in the sky and I have to shield my eyes. I hear people talking, dogs barking and the rustle of trees. My arm grows tired so I lay it down at my side and close my eyes. The sun glows orange through my eyelids and I feel the intense heat against my cheeks and chest and all over.
When I wake the sun has left my eye line but it is not yet dark. I see large pink and orange clouds and birds fly over. There is shouting and a ball is kicked. I try to block out the sounds and concentrate on the sky above. I remain motionless looking as far away from the world and life as possible.
I watch the night sky arrive and the clouds leave and I stare at the stars. I imagine I’m God looking out across the galaxy. I feel detached from this planet, this body. If I stay here long enough, ignoring its presence will it disappear completely?
I wake and there is light but I am cast in a shadow. A woman is stood over with a puzzled look on her face.
‘Are you ok?’
I wave a hand to make her leave and close my eyes again. I know she is still stood there.
‘How long have you been here?’
I open my eyes and stare up at her.
‘Since yesterday,’ I say and my throat feels dry.
‘Why?’
‘I’m trying to escape everything,’ I say.
‘Oh,’ she says.
She moves and I have to close my eyes as the sun burns my eyes. I hear something placed on the ground beside me as she lies down.
‘That is relaxing,’ she says.
‘Please be quiet,’ I say.
I can still hear her breathing, but eventually it goes as I watch the clouds drift over me. The only sign of life the occasional plane trailing across the blue sky.
I wake and I hear murmurs and whispering carried on a fresh breeze and the sun is almost out of sight. I swallow and it sticks in my throat and my skin feels dry and burnt. My stomach rumbles and I know I cannot stay much longer. I managed to escape almost everything for over a day, but I know I cannot forever. My arms and legs are stiff as try to find my feet and ease myself up. I take another minute of the sky in; its tranquility, then I sit up. I look to my right and the woman still lays there, her eyes closed. She is not alone though. There are bodies all around, far across the park. They all lay staring up at the sky as the moon begins to show, a motionless sea of bodies. I stand and cast shadow and people complain and close their eyes. I am surrounded all around and cannot escape.
I lie back down and return my eyes to the sky and hope everything will go away.
