I - The Sermon

Sitting in the chapel wrapped in robes of red
I shut my eyes tightly to let images play inside my head
Blobs of light flared from orange limbo and were still there
When I opened them and watched them dance in incensed air
At the front a dark-suited man stood and boomed
I think he spoke of sin, and why we were all doomed
From birth, when all I, for one, wanted to do
Was sleep and drink and eat and spew
So I let his words drift to the rafters above
Until they became meaningless, like a fluttering dove
Cooing in the morning, unhindered and free
Just how I wanted this booming man to be
Until I looked at my watch and realised as I yawned
That he'd gone on all night and day would soon have dawned
Eyes closed again, I conjured a fireball
Let it float from my face, to the heights of the hall
Sent it spinning down to envelop his head
So the marble walls would flicker with red
And we'd all run screaming into the night
But he'd be silent, with his sense of self-satisfied right
Then he stopped and I'd drifted far away
And I was nudged as the organ started to play.
