FIFTH COLUMN (LONDON)

In Trafalgar Square, with his one good eye
A hero is watching as people rush by
To the bright lights of theatres, all glamour and fun
The clink of the glasses, tourists on the run
From Palace to Tower to Sherlock Holmes pub,
Then back to hotels for their dinner then club.
Next day’s about culture; you really should see ‘em
As they do in one hour the Science Museum!
Natural History – ten minutes, there’s no time to stay
For it’s back on the coach to the old V and A!
The click of the cameras and shuffling of feet,
Stepping over the homeless living here on the street.
And they don’t even notice how many there are;
Some born here in London, some come from afar.
And though it is Summer, they always feel cold
Yet still they keep seeking those streets paved with gold.
Sightseers crowd on to the open top bus
Still giggling and joking, they don’t notice us
On the steps of St Martins they pass us right by –
A man with a medal, a dog, and one eye.

I do like this Linda - a great idea having contrasting views of London, and lifestyles, with the homeless as witnesses to the tourists doing the sights. Just one thing...do you need both exclamation marks, so close together? Nevertheless, a really good piece.

A humourous teasing of the tourists getting London 'done'! with thought to the broken dreams of others. I remember being shown tourists landing in Scotland from a cruise ship when I was young, and being told they were coming to do Scotland in a day. Some fun use of rhyming and a clever comparison between the last and first lines. Rhiannon
