The Road We Walked Alone

I walked behind you, alone on the road, following in your footsteps; my feet fit perfectly.
Looking ahead, the road it winds, its path unpredictable; every step taken, informed by the last, changes the one that comes next. A treadmill of uncertainty, propelling forth those who walk to the future.
A single lane stretched to horizon’s vanishing and continuing to future still, with nothing to the left nor to the right, yet not in isolation. Intersections exist with the roads of others but the maps they fail to see; temporary companions, encounters with impermanence, people come and go but the road ahead remains empty save your footprints under sole.
Despite it all, I still maintain, I look forward to the day, my road becomes a little less lonely, when we’re not just walking the same way. To walk with one just like me, perhaps even more so; never again, on my own, on this road we walked alone.
