Camping, Moi?

We like going to Cromer and think it’s fab.
The town is renowned for fish and chips,
cockles and mussels and its dressed crab.
We drive towards it but the traffic is slow
because we are stuck behind caravans.
“Are we nearly there?” the kids want to know;
there’s lot to see and the journey isn’t boring.
We go through small villages at thirty mph,
not far from Fakenham there is Little Snoring
( in the Doomsday Book in ten-eighty-five ).
This snippet of history is met with yawns,
which are caused, I believe, by the long drive.
Some camper vans that have joined the queue
are proceeding, at snail’s pace, on the A148.
Their drivers will be glad to see their campsite
and we will be happy to see them disappear
from the jam-packed road and out of our sight.
We know that our destination is not very far
and that we won’t spend our nights in a tent
as the hotel we booked comes with five stars
and that, from the start, was our only intent.

Made me smile at the end,
Made me smile at the end, although I really love caravans and camping. But traffic sucks!
Enjoyed your humour.

When we camped when I was
When we camped when I was young, it so often was a fine evening, but rained by morning. We thought those in caravans were the rich (I think we thought them snooty), but when we were loaned a caravan, we thought those in houses were the rich, but then we took a little cottage for holidays! My children and their families have always been much more brave than I was about camping - a lot of gear to sort out! Rhiannon

Hi Luigi,
Hi Luigi,
this poem reminded me of travelling down to Cornwall on an August bank holiday, would you believe how foolish that was? It took us ten hours to get there, on a journey that normally takes about four hours. Then we had to put tents up, it was a nightmare because it was so hot and sticky...I'll never forget it. Your poem was a perfect example of why not to travel on a bank holiday weekend.
Brilliant IP by the way.
Jenny. xx
