In a Country Church

I am not a religious person
in need of spiritual healing,
and yet I am in this church
not praying, just kneeling.
A nobleman and his spouse
in a vault under the floor lie.
Their features on the latten
immediately caught my eye.
All of my friends like to play,
enjoy dancing and go clubbing.
My leisure time is more sober.
I'm just keen on brass rubbing.
I prefer quite sedate activities
and in order to completely relax
I need a sheet of butcher's paper
and a heelball of suitable wax.
It was popular in Victorian times
but in these days it's possibly less
although still a favourite of mine.
An indulgence I have to confess.
The couple's names and the dates
displayed on the ornamental plate
suggest Middle Ages occurrences
that one is obliged to investigate.
I shall endeavour to find an answer
to this intriguing medieval enigma.
Will it be a straightforward matter
or will it reveal disgrace and stigma?

Your answers
I hope you find your answers although it really doesn't matter much does it?! But it might well be interesting.
As on an elegy in a country churchyard, but as "Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, and waste its sweetness on the desert air".
All the best for 2026 Luigi! Nolan &

Hi Luigi,
Hi Luigi,
you've reminded me of the time I went to Stratford-Upon-Avon some years ago. I did some brass rubbings and found it really enjoyable.
I like the rhyming of your poem and the idea that fun can be had from this hobby.
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Jenny. xx
