Jessica's Life Journey (13) - Hot On the Trail

'Cherchez la femme ' is an expression that I have come across countless times in works of fiction, usually detective stories.
The inference is that a woman is the root cause of the problem being investigated and by identifying her the case can be solved.
We didn't have any case on our books requiring such a task but, in view of my business partner's secretive behaviour and his meeting with a mysterious lady, it was imperative, I thought, to ascertain who she is and her relevance to the Eagle Eye detective agency.
She may well be a prospective client and a prosperous one, according to the taxi driver who has witnessed the encounter, but no mention of it has been made by Will.
Not yet, at any rate, but I am waiting to be briefed.

It was nine o'clock when I went to the office. Will wasn't there but he must have been in earlier as his laptop was open on his desk.
The screen was showing the website of an escort agency.
I was speechless and my imagination ran wild. Was he so frustrated by his recent experience of having been jilted that he had to resort to these services that had a dubious reputation?
He returned holding a tray with two cups of Carlo's delicious cappuccino and two croissants, before I was able to make further investigations.
I didn't know whether I should ask him right away what was going on or wait for him to come clean.
Playing for time, I mentioned that we had no bookings for today and I would spend the morning dealing with the accounts.
He replied that he was glad of the breathing space because he had something to do and he would take the rest of the day off.
He didn't elaborate and left me wondering if he was in trouble and what the problem was.
I wish that he would confide in me like he used to do but our relationship has cooled quite considerably for that to continue.
He went out and, from the window, I saw him on the pavement below patting his jacket to check if his mobile phone was in the inside pocket.
The device was still on his desk, so, before he came to retrieve it, I pressed the 'last call' button and made a note of the number.

A female voice answered my call.
“Diagnostic Services. How may help you?”
It wasn't what I expected and, being at a loss on what to say, I pretended to have rung the wrong number.
It looked as if the situation was getting worse by the minute.
I checked what services that particular lab offered and found that they involved genetics.
The discovery could mean that Will was being treated for a rare disorder or another explanation, equally unpleasant to contemplate, had to be considered; that a DNA test was being conducted at his request.
Is a paternity claim the crux of the matter?
