Platypus

God’s little helpers had made a mistake. They thought
they had finished, but there were things still to make.
The bins were all empty, so they went to the store and
rummaged in the cupboards in hope of finding more.
For two whole weeks they’d been making GNUS, but
had now used up all their Gs, Ns and Us.
So they searched through the storeroom for more crucial
bits, but found only oddments and centipede kits.
God would be cross if they failed in their task, and the
odd bits they had proved a really difficult ask.
What could you do with such an array, a ridiculous beak
a venomous spur and four webbed feet encased in fur?
So they ploughed on regardless and created what they
could, fixing bits in places that hopefully looked good.
Just as they had finished, God called in, and when he
saw the end result he couldn’t help but grin.
That’s absolutely brilliant, he told his anxious throng, to
fashion something so unique from bits that don’t belong.
It’s very flat and foot shaped so we’ll adopt its name from
the Greek, platys-pous we’ll call it, distinctive and unique.
The helpers cried in pure delight and wrapped it for post,
addressing it to Australia, along the Queensland coast.
Now if you ever see one cavorting in a creek, admire his
shy ‘leftoverness’ and electroreceptive beak.

Come to think of it
Come to think of it, they do look rather odd don't they?! The evolutionists would also have a field day sorting this one out!
