BERK!

Was standing at the traffic lights, waiting for the pedestrian man to change to green so we could cross over the road.

Suddenly to our left, we heard a Very Loud motorbike, with a Very Loud exhaust!

I said, “Berk!” Three of us were there waiting to cross, three different ages, and three different nationalities.

The older woman said, “Agree!” It was then I looked at the woman to my left, and thought I wonder if she SO young would know what I have just said and meant? I hoped she didn’t think I had said something offensive. My kids, would have heard me say that sometimes throughout their lives.

The man on the motorbike then drove on, when his lights turned green, as we still waited for our lights to change for us, not only was his exhaust LOUD, he was on one back wheel as he sped off, up the road!

I wanted to say berk again, but didn’t, just in case, I said, “Doing that, he could cause an accident,” The older woman said, “Yes, or wrap himself around a lamp post!”

It made me think, how times and words have changed, and sometimes I say things, I haven’t said for years. I used to say to my Mum, “In all the years that I have known you, I have never heard you say that.” So, if I was nineteen, I would say, “In all the nineteen years I have known you, I have never heard you say that.” We would laugh.

Berk was one of those moments, and when I got home, I told Meghan, about it, and the other younger woman on my left, and wondered what she would have thought of my word.
