Like a Hero in the Movies

One rainy day he lay down his jacket
by the kerb.
It carried Simone over the puddle
like a magic carpet
and made him feel like a hero
in the movies.
He did not tell her he was already planning
on throwing the jacket away
the next day
because he could not get rid of the smell of soy sauce
from the lining.

He decided to write a song for her
and play it to her on his guitar
on Valentine's Day
but as writer's block got the better of him
he just sang a song from a Coldplay bside
and told SImone he had written it
for her.
He had no idea she owned the single
on limited edition 7 inch.

He would have sailed the seven seas for her
but did not know if they existed
or were fictional
and he had a fear of water
since the incident at Centre Parks.

He would have walked over hot coals for her
but the opportunity
never arose.

He would have taken a bullet for her
but the idea did not occur to him
until they were leaving the off-licence
in an ambulance
and he was willing her
to recover.
