Johnny walked me to the church,
and took me by the hand
It was 1945 when our honeymoon was planned,
but something happened to our world
and Johnny had to go,
to fight a war instead of loving the girl he got to know .

Australia remembers the love we hardly knew.

I never can forget that day , when Johnny went away,
my heart was in my throat, I didn't know what I could say,
to help him through the hard times,
and in what he had to do
