In The Echoes Of Times Long Gone
By Paul McCann
Looking around Belfast City with thoughts
of the beauty that I had once found
Knowing well the secrets that kept hearts together
when the hard times came around .
It’s a grace that spreads the jam on dry bread
and makes linen white in every home.
It’s a sound of the flurry of feet on the street
where the flaxy people roam .
It’s the whistle of corner boys in the back streets
that serenade passers by
The gift of a wink and a nod that speaks
to you without ever asking why .
There’s a lot to be said for the future
In the echoes of the times long gone
Where the Lagan flows and the wind blows
and the city knows all that’s going on .
