AN EMPTY SHOE
When I found a dead man’s shoe I thought which side was he on.
The town was burnt down and all of its occupants had gone.
There had been a bloodbath in this place I was walking through.
All that was left was a dead man’s shoe no match for the two.
Somebody must have worn it once; but the question is who?
When a soldier has to do what a soldier has to do,
Sometimes a soldier has to die,
Yes it’s sad but it’s true.
On an empty street some the buildings are still smoking,
Shackled to the sky was that past incident evoking.
To the memory of a hero is a dead man’s shoe.
Tell me what side he was on and does it matter to you.
