An Everyday Week At Holy Cross
By Paul McCann
The bells rang out on Sunday,
it was time to come to mass,
There's was also weekday masses
if anyone should ask.
If there was chitter chatter
everyone would give you glares.
for there’s always people there
who are trying to say their prayers.
Then on Saturday
You’d take a seat to confess your sins
Sometimes a priest would shout ,
:You did what ?”
as everyone grins ,
then they’d move to another confessional
box elsewhere
examining their conscience
to see if something was there .
Monday’s was choir practice
and all the boys would come to sing ,
and together in one voice ‘
Praise be Jesus Christ our King .
and the gusto Freddie Fusco
could clearly hear as well
as Paddy the sacristan
accidently rang the bell .
Tuesdays and rosaries
with the legion of Mary were there ,
and then there would be adoration
all in silent prayer .
A life spent on bended knee
for the Saints you’d never see
Wednesdays St Vincents De Pauls meetings
behind closed doors
and if you listened really hard
heads rolled upon the floors .
Some things you weren’t allowed to hear
for fear of being judged
but nobody budged just in case
they’d think you had a grudge .
Thursdays the men’s confraternity
had a meeting too ,
with discussions on envelopes
and things that they should do .
The gathering of men who were
Catholic in every sense ,
Brought smiles upon their faces
whist doing daily penance .
Fridays some would come
and visit a favourite priest of theirs
and take a little offering
for offering up some prayers
and the priest’s always liked a visit
every now and then
from the people of Ardoyne
who always looked up to them .
