Father’s Hard Times
By Paul McCann
My Father’s people came from Ireland , that’s the place were I was born .
I lived out my childhood days in a Belfast village called Ardoyne .
There were seven in our family living in a terrace home .
Looking down from our street you could see the hills of the Marrowbone .
Understanding the hard times were a thing the people had to give .
People all over Ireland came there for work and a place to live .
My fathers name was Samuel his people came from Sailorstown .
It was a hard old station there by the docks in dear old Belfast town .
There were seven in his family in an upstairs bed sit flat ,
They adapted to a living space with no room to swing a cat
Downstairs in Great Patrick Street lived Frank Carson and his family .
In those days a good sense of humour was what saved your sanity .
