Freddie And the Frisco Night Disco
By Paul McCann
The Friday night disco in Frisco Street was a popular hangout for all the local girls and boys . The was a doorman was asked some of the younger looking ones for some ID or proof of their age . Many of the kids would keep him on his toes by orchestrating disruptive behaviour like a well-planned surge of people all trying to get in the door and what resulted was chaos that resembled a herd of thirsty camels trying to get through a tiny gate to get to the oasis waterhole . Eventually the doorman gave up and let them all in with any checks . The young crowd were excited and itching to dance .
There were always new faces to see and the odds of meeting someone special was always in your favour if you had the right moves and were willing to take a chance and ask for a dance ..
The Frisco Street disco hall was always packed and sometimes there was hardly room to move on the dance floor . That was usually when all the boys stood around in groups with their backs to the wall watching all the girls dance on the floor . The boys often tried showing off if the danced with a girl and invented an interesting move with something to prove for everyone who was watching .
Freddie was one of those dreamers who liked to imagine he was invincible and liked to pick fights to impress the girls but honestly, he couldn’t punch his way out of a paper bag and usually ended up with a black eye for his trouble .
getting . One Friday night Freddie asked a girl he fancied if she would like to have dinner after the dance and when she said she couldn’t because she had to be home early he asked her if he could walk her home and when she said her Father was going to pick her up at the front door he asked her if she wanted to go to see a movie on Saturday night in a fancy movie theatre in the city but she told him she had to visit her grandparents on Saturday and they would be staying there until Monday so Freddie got upset and picked a fight with an innocent guy who was minding his own business sitting at the bar .
The problem was the quiet man was a professional fighter and poor Freddie ended up lying unconscious on the floor . The girl he had been chatting up felt guilty and went over to see if she could help him . When Freddie opened his eyes she said ,
“You knocked yourself out for me so I guess we can catch a movie tomorrow “
“Don’t you have to go to see your grandparents ?”
He asked and she replied ,
“I can always change my plans “
Then a song was played that she loved and she asked him if he wanted a dance and Freddie was up on his feet in seconds . What a night they had together and she even said it was ok to walk her home as her father wasn’t able to pick her up .
That night was the beginning of a long relationship and Freddie and Mary got married a year later at the local church .
They had the reception at The Frisco Disco Hall and as usual most of the girls danced and the boys all stood with their backs against the wall,
The music and the food were something else and everyone had a great time at the wedding . Sometimes things just happen like that because it was a simple twist of fate . Freddie and Mary’s wedding sparked a surge of people getting wed and half the town went along for the ride . Teenagers in love in the ghetto became the going thing and they all understood the urgency as if they had a fever burning out of control and they needed to get married right away to cure their condition .
Some blamed it on the disco other said it was a trend but many of those who were married fell in love so fast they never had time to think it through .
Life was a sweet thing and there were new faces and new dance moves every Friday at the Frisco Disco Hall . It was a contagious thing , usually one look was all it6 took and the rest was like a broken record with the same old tune playing over and over again and again . Everyone sang along and life was all about throwing in a line with a bait attached and catching someone fast and as furious as possible ending up as a married couple . Every young couple who had become man and wife had children and the rears passed by quickly with the same old things happening at Friday Night Disco Iin Frisco Street .
It was a time when the disco craze had become the reason to get wed and if you didn’t take a chance and go to the dance then you would probably end up sitting alone in front of the fire thinking you should have gone out to those Friday night discos when you were young and you had the ability to make a few moves and try to impress somebody by the way you could dance . That’s how it was then when all the young women and men were together in body , mind and spirit .’
Everyone was part of a crowd and the crowd was one in everything they did .
These days it much different with on line dating sites and chat rooms .
Today people meet in the loneliest of places trying to break the ice with each other.
You know times have changed and the Frisco Disco has long been demolished and there are new songs and new attitudes . Marriages don’t seem to last as long as they used to these days . Oh, maybe it’s time to get back to the disco again and find that special connection with someone before it’s too late and everyone ends up sitting in front of the fireplace thinking what they might have missed .
The end
