Stop This Carrying On - By Paul McCann
Standing round the corner all the boys would hang about
Till the singing cop would put them in a spin,
His note book out and in his hand a pencil would be drawn
And then he’d sing that old familiar song .
Stop this carrying on now . Stop this carrying on ,
Before the day is done or you’ll be gone ,
To a place down town I know under lock and key ,
Singing through the bars set me free .
So listen now I’m telling you stop this carrying on ,
For you names have all been put down in the book ,
And as he’d turn and walk away the boys would scream and shout
We’re the boys who’s names you never took .
Stop this carrying on now . Stop this carrying on ,
Before the day is done or you’ll be gone ,
To a place down town I know under lock and key ,
Singing through the bars set me free .
By hook or crook or by the book
The boys would all push on
to keep the peace and harmony in tune
and standing round the corner with a smile upon his face
the singing cop was crooning to the moon .
Stop this carrying on now . Stop this carrying on ,
Before the day is done or you’ll be gone ,
To a place down town I know under lock and key ,
Singing through the bars set me free .
The corner now is gone and the cop is seen no more
But the song reminds us where to draw the line
If you cannot change your tune
You’ll be carrying on with list of people
who are doing time .
Stop this carrying on now . Stop this carrying on ,
Before the day is done or you’ll be gone ,
To a place down town I know under lock and key ,
Singing through the bars set me free .
