A Working Mans Letter From Overseas
By Paul McCann
It’s just a few lines to say hello .
I miss you and all the kids you know.
Being away from you breaks my heart .
I hope you and the kids are okay
Think of you all every night and day ,
It’s the first time that we’ve been apart .
We’re all working double shifts each day
trying to make up a decent pay,
just so we can send some money home.
Everybody is struggling here,
away from all those we love so dear .
Its hard sometimes to be on your own .
All of us here on the building site,
haven’t got much time to sit and write
but I’m not able to work today .
It looks like I’ve done myself some harm ,
there’s some cuts and bruises on my arm
and there’s a problem with both my knees .
Every night and day I did my best
for months working without any rest
But I’m coming home from overseas .
I don’t know if I can work again
after falling through the window pane
and hitting the pavement down below .
When I took this job on over here
we were told the risks, they made it clear .
There’s no compensation , as you know .
I’ll be home next week with four weeks pay
but there’s no more work for me they say.
The recovery will be long and slow ..
.
