We'll be Back!
On the seventeenth of August 1974
Red hordes invaded Brisbane Road with a roar.
Ten thousand took over the Orient’s patch
to watch their heroes first away match...
The prize... to top Football League Division Two.
At the back Big Jim Holton’s eyes of blue
spotted any attackers trying to get through.
Steady keeper Stepney saved a pen or two,
threw passes to fullbacks Forsyth or Stu...
The ‘Houston’ that never had a problem!
Blonde ball winner Brian fed Super Sammy Mac
as daring Red Devils went on lightning attack,
forward to the chant of Greenhoff! Greenhoff!
Dizzy defenders all back tracked,
with Pancho’s runs their brains were wracked.
Tried to catch wing wizard Willie bang offside
he just crossed the ball beautifully from out wide
where Gerry Daley shimmied, slipped his man
‘Push on!’ Shouted cool Colonel Martin Buchan.
Scottish imp, Lou Macari skipped past the centre half,
hailed and waved on by wrist tied silk scarves,
mulleted mates took the O’s end and their beer
United fans had nothing to fear...
as a perfect pass put our Willie in the box,
poor fullback went down with twisted socks...
Morgan looked up and made the most
of slack marking on Orients far post...
a deft chip and it was two nil, all over...
The Doc and Tommy Cav went home in clover.
Through Autumn, Winter and Spring they plundered 66 goals
with solid top reds in keen supporting roles...
Young Arthur A and Jimmy Nick covered the backs
Jim McCalliog’s skills impressed the hacks.
Steve Coppell arrived and shot down the wing
Ron Davies popped up and scored with a zing.
Pencil thin Paddy subbed at keeper
Stevie James and Arnie stepped in as sweepers.
Tony Young and Mick Martin stood able and fit,
got their chance to tackle, never quit.
So Doc’s Red Army ruled the second tier
this magical team had no footballing peer.
At Old Trafford In the merry, merry, month of May
Blackpool came down on celebration day.
Dispatched four-nil to ecstatic chants...
Greenhoff, Lou, Pancho got two,
the Cup was presented to the Champs.
As Captain Martin held the trophy aloft,
the ‘We’ll Be Back’ woolly hats were duly doffed.
Sir to be, Matt Busby, shed a tear and coughed...
Disappeared... that relegation frown
The Stretford End was back in Town!
