Chapter 2
I called Paulina on the Saturday after Sam, Dean, and I got to my apartment.
“Hey Paulina, this is Sara.” I said.
“Hey Sara, what’s up? Are you back home?”
“Yea, and I was wondering if you wanted to come swim at the pool today. The sun is out and I figured that we could catch up and get a tan at the same time.”
“Hell yea! I’ll be over in about thirty minutes.”
“Okay cool, just meet at the pool. I definitely have some stuff to talk to you about.”
“Alrighty, bye.”
“Bye.”
As I hung up with Paulina, I looked at the phone hoping that she was going to be okay after everything.
“Sara, are you okay?” Sam asked.
“Yea, I just hate that this is happening to my friends. I never wanted them to ever have to go through this.”
“That is what happens when you are close to your friends and family in this business.” Dean explained.
“I know, I just wished that if demons wanted me, that they wouldn’t go through my friends like cowards and just go through me.”
“They go through your friends because they know that it kills a part of you inside.” Dean said.
“Oh…” I looked at my hands and hated that this was all my fault. My friends were being tortured because of my existence. I looked up and I swore that this was going to end.
“Sam, Dean, I think that I should meet with Paulina at the pool by myself. Let us have some time together before we do all of this. I want to spend some time with her, apologize for what I’m going to do.”
“There is no need to apologize to her, what you are going to do is save her, but I understand. I will call you on your cell in one hour with the full plan okay?” Sam asked.
“Okay.” I changed into my bikini and put on a sun dress and grabbed my cell, a towel, and some sun lotion and headed toward the pool.
As I walked to the entrance, Paulina pulled up. I walked up to her car and as she got out of the car I gave her a big hug. We walked to the pool and laid our towels on the lounge chairs and jumped in the pool.
We talked for about thirty minutes about our lives and how everything was going on.
“So I have something interesting to talk to you about.” I started.
“Spill, sister.”
“I met these two guys.”
“Yeah, and…”
“Their names are Sam and Dean. They are really cool. I met them through Michael. Their dad passed away not too long ago, just like mine.”
“Ooh, sounds like you are crushing on them.”
“Nah, I just think that the three of us have a lot in common, and plus, if I was crushing on them it would most definitely be Sam. Dean is too…I can’t think of the right word…”
“I know what you mean. So what does Sam look like?”
“Well he is tall, has light brown shaggy hair, and he is super sensitive.”
“Well that is the perfect guy for you!”
“I know right. Man I don’t know about you, but I have so needed this after everything that has happened, you know, with my dad and all.”
“Well you know that I will always be here for you.”
“Yea, I know.” As I finished saying that, a tear escaped my eye. I tried to hide it, but Paulina had already seen it.
“Sara, are you okay, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I just miss my dad. He was all I had and now he is gone and I have no one.”
“You still have me, and I’m not going anywhere.”
Paulina sat up and put her arms around me and hugged me so tight that I just melted into her arms and cried. I hated showing any kinds of emotion but when I’m with Paulina, I just can’t ever hold any of it in. It felt like we just sat there and hugged forever, but when my phone rang I remembered why I was there. I wanted to ignore the ring. Sara tried to pull me away so I could answer the phone, but I wouldn’t let go. I didn’t want this to end. It was like everything was better. My dad was still alive and so was my mom. We lived together in a big house and our lives were perfect. But Paulina pulled me back to reality.
“Sara, you should answer your phone. It’s been ringing off the hook for the past 5 minutes.”
“Oh, sorry. I was just seeing a life that was too perfect to be real. But I wanted it so bad.”
“Your life is perfect just the way it is, just a few holes in there. Okay maybe not so perfect, but you have me and now these guys, Sam and Dean, might be just what you need.”
“Thanks, Paulina. I needed that.”
“I told you, that’s what I’m here for. We are like sisters.”
“Thanks.” As we finished talking, my cell rang again. I knew that if I didn’t answer it Sam and Dean would get mad.
I answered the phone on the third ring, “Hello?”
“Sara, are you okay, why wouldn’t you answer my calls?”
“I’m sorry, it’s a long story.”
“Okay, so are you ready for this to happen?”
“Not really. Let me call you back in a minute, okay?”
“Yea, just don’t take too long.”
“Okay. Bye.”
Paulina just gave me an odd look.
“Is everything okay, who was on the phone?”
“Yea, everything’s fine and that was just Sam. Look I will be right back okay?”
“Yea, what’s up? Do you need me to come with you?”
“Nah, I’ll be fine. I’m just getting something from the apartment.”
“All right, well I’ll be here, soaking up all the sun.”
I left Paulina at the pool as I went back to the apartment to grab Sam and Dean. As I walked to the door I grabbed my phone and called Sam.
“Hey, I’m at the door, let me in.”
Immediately the door opened. Sam was behind the door and let me walk in. As I was past the door, Sam shut it and Dean was standing about a yard away from me. I knew that I was in trouble.
“Hey, so I’m here and I’m ready to do this.”
“Are you sure, cause you wouldn’t answer the phone earlier.” Dean said.
“Look, I’m sorry about that. Paulina and I were talking about a lot of stuff and it took my mind off of everything that happened. Maybe there is nothing inside of her anymore. She seems as normal as ever.”
“Sara, stop and listen to what you are saying. You asked Dean and me to follow you here because you knew that something was wrong with Paulina and now you are just saying that she might be clean. We have to do this. Sara you have to let us go through with this.”
“I don’t like it, but I guess we have to make sure that Paulina is okay. Here is the deal though, I will be there for everything no matter what. If I don’t like what you two are doing, then it stops. Are we clear.”
“Crystal, but Sara, you need to understand that what we have to do to see if the demon is still inside her is a lot that you probably won’t like. When we start, we have to finish, you can’t stop us or Paulina might get hurt.”
“Okay, just don’t hurt her, she is all I have left here. I don’t know what I would if I lost her.”
“Alright. Let’s get everything and head down there.” Dean said.
We left the apartment with the holy water, a cross for me to drop into the pool while Paulina is meeting Sam and Dean, and some other items that I didn’t recognize. As we reached the pool, I stopped Sam and Dean.
“Okay, so we are clear with the plan, right?”
“Yes, Sara.” Sam said.
“Yep. Let’s do this.” Dean agreed.
We walked to where Paulina was still laying out, and as we reached her, the mood had suddenly changed. No one else could tell, but somehow I could. I left Sam and Dean just standing and walked over to Paulina.
“Hey girl, I want to introduce you to some people.”
“Okay, where are they?”
“Right over there. Go over there and ill catch up.”
As Paulina started to walk over to meet Sam and Dean, I carefully dropped the cross in the pool filter. Then I jumped up and ran over to Paulina.
“So, Paulina, this is Sam and Dean. Sam, Dean, this is my sister, Paulina.”
“Nice to meet you Paulina.” Sam said.
“Ditto.” Dean agreed.
“So are ya’ll gonna come and swim for a bit?” Paulina asked.
“Nah, we just thought that we would pop over and say hi to Sara and she suggested that we could come and meet you.” Sam said.
“Oh okay, you should still jump in anyways. Enough pool for everyone.”
“Okay sure, you jump in first and we will be right behind you.” Dean said joyfully.
Paulina jumped in and didn’t come up for air. I ran to the edge of the pool and looked into the pool trying to see what happened and why she wasn’t coming up for air.
“Sara, move, now!” Dean said as he ran towards me.
I couldn’t move. I just kept looking into the pool, wishing that Paulina would come up for air. But she wouldn’t. As I started to stand up and move to jump in the pool, Sam caught me half way and held on to me.
“Let me go, I have to save her. If she stays down there she will die.” I screamed and struggled as I tried to get free of Sam’s grasp on me.
“Dean, hurry up. Sara is stronger than we thought. I won’t be able to hold onto her for much longer.”
I kept trying to get free as hard as I could, but I was starting to lose energy. I didn’t notice until it was too late that Sam; as he was holding me back; was gently pushing on a pressure point. Everything went black and I was out.
* * * * * *
I gently laid Sara down on the beach chair.
“Sam, get over here and help me pull Paulina out of the water.”
Dean was already in the pool and had Paulina in his arms. She wasn’t moving. I took her from Dean and put her on the ground gently. I checked her heart to see if she was still breathing and thankfully she was, Sara would never have let us live with that if we let Paulina die.
“So what is the plan again, Dean?”
“Well, this demon is different than the other ones, so we can’t exorcise it straight from Paulina’s body, if we do that, there is a chance that the demon could pull out her soul along with itself.”
“Since when was that a possibility?”
“Since I noticed the tattoo on Paulina’s back. According to Dad’s journal, there is a ritual that a demon can perform to seal the soul of the host inside the body, so if someone tries to exorcise the demon straight out of the body, then the demon latches itself with the soul and both are exorcised and sent to hell.”
“So how do we save Paulina?”
“We transfer the demon to another body that it doesn’t have a seal on.”
“Well who can we transfer the demon to, not us since we have seals that protect us from possession.”
“Sara. She is the only one that doesn’t have a protection seal. And after this, we can make sure that Sara gets a seal.”
