Dust and Wind

Dust and wind
And so I left, as you yourself had left
Sullen, sudden and not a word
Either of remorse or goodbye.
Those words could not be spoken.
Although I left you behind,
I carried your hurt every step of the way.
So, off into the wide blue yonder
(which was yet another delusion I had prided myself on,
as it was narrow, red-brown and dry).
And it was here that I found
the ultimate reflection of us.
Found in a dust storm
That found me eventually.
Both dust and wind
Truly opposite elements.
Perhaps just as opposite and you and I.
Twisting, turning, joining and then flying apart.
Each element on its own
And yet joined by a bond of eternal co-incidence.
The wind, bound to the dust
Fighting vainly to avoid picking up
That which it knows it can't carry.
And the dust, not realizing, nor bending to
Either the laws of gravity
or the gravity of the situation,
is picked up.
Twirled and twisted,
Longing for its return to earth.
Not yet realizing the full burden
it imposes on the wind.
Forcing it to struggle harder and harder
Forcing it to take it farther and farther.
Till the dust storm, as a one, becomes a two.
The dust resettles and the wind flies on.
Both bearing the scars of unsettlement
and uncertainty.
For what are we, my darling,
But dust and wind.
