Independence

Broken wings of an angel
Handy-work of some sinister saboteur
Vacant of strength in the imperfection
Like a gull felled by once supportive winds
Fiancee of pretences taking the vows
A phoenix reborn from the ashes of Hope's demise
You fancied yourself a warrior clad in steel
Clutching a shield forged in the bonfire of dreams denied
Once weak-now so strong
Fool no more
But your smiling teeth are grinding...
In victory you took back your soul as a trophy
A symbol to those who have pained you
A symbol of resilience
A symbol of independence
A symbol that no one will care to notice
You stand tall dressed in triumph
But the ever-present weeping in the back of your mind
reminds you of battlescars
Nevertheless, you'll stick to your guns
But the bullets exit the chambers with a certain reluctance
Your head's in the heavens, you're
holding hands with the devil
Imagining the countenance of God
In your claim as ruler of your reality
Destiny is predetermined
The reigns you hold in that white-knuckled grip
Lead to the noose around your neck
Will your eyes be bathed in defiant tears
or will you accept with a cringe
when they all demand an encore?
