Fragile uplands

Anniversary lunch at Craven Arms, Shropshire.
Shall we drive up the Long Mynd again?
Not necessarily walk much, but a renewed taste
of the lovely views of entwined valleys.
“No Entry! High risk of wild fires”.
We drove along to Carding Mill Valley
but it was very busy, so on to a narrow lane
winding around, and into a quiet valley
and then up, the road took us up to the top
to a part we’d not been before.
Everything brown and scorched
and sheep sheltering, resting in the shadows
– some searching patiently nibbling what they could find.
Far views over to Caer Caradoc, and the plain north
with the Wrekin standing out like a pyramid..
Then the road suddenly descended and we were back
in All Stretton, so off home,
but what a lovely visit
in Shropshire’s Little Switzerland.

Happy Anniversary Rhiannon
Happy Anniversary Rhiannon and thank you for sharing this. I hope you've had some rain by now - even we had a little here last night. Not enough to change the colour of the grass though, and I suppose it will be a while before the danger of wildfire passes too, but it's a start!

Shropshire
I have had many lovely walking holidays in Shropshire, it's so beautiful and unspoilt. I don't know why more people haven't heard of the Welsh Marches but then perhaps it's a good job they haven't ! My family (the Lancasters) were saddlers in Bridge St in Knighton and my mum was evacuated there during the war. It must be wonderful to live so close you can just go and walk the Long Mynd for a day trip. Happy Anniversary !
