Jesus tempted by Satan

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
Satan tempted Christ His skill
to use without submission
to His Father’s word and will
– he sought to spoil Christ’s mission.
Satan tempted Christ to test
God’s care in foolish, faithless act,
Satan misused the Scripture text –
God’s faithful ones He will protect.
Satan tempted Christ to take
the imitation gifts he’d give.
God’s worship Christ would not forsake,
in His good service we must live.
Matthew’s Gospel chapter 4 verses 1 to 11
and this was one I did a long time ago on the same passage
The devil tempted Christ to turn
–his Father’s care to doubt or spurn,
but on God’s Word the Son stood firm.
The devil tempted Christ to test
his Father’s care – such sin resist.
Do not misuse the Scripture text.
The devil tempted Christ to lust
for glory vain by misplaced trust.
Satanic lures abhor, detest.
Defeated Satan went away;
and angels served Christ’s needs, so pray
Christ’s help to battle day by day.
Tune: 888 iambic eg St Aidan by F R Grey arr J B Dykes
