Stunning spectacle seeing sun consumed –
slides the disc across – dusk;
cool, still, birds surprised  –
            daylight returns:
brief absence, our dependency displayed.

I hope you had clear sunshine with no clouds as we did here for it Rhiannon? It was pretty special wasn't it?

It was clear, though I must confess I didn't watch it 'live' this time, I can remember using a pinhole with the children years ago, but I was sent photos of my grand-daughters watching it through the special glasses, which was lovely for them as they have been loaned a good telescope (not for eclipse watching, of course!) and so the interest was heightened. Spectacular even watching on the internet afterwards! Rhiannon

I live near Cirencester and watched it through a colander projecting little round suns onto a piece of white paper.  My friend had made a pinhole camera out of a cardboard box. The little round suns did briefly look like someone had taken a bite out of them (about 7.13) but that was it.  I think it was supposed to be better further down in the west country.  I expect it was good down in Wales.

The best bit for me was the eldritch light which started about 6.30, amazingly atmospheric and spooky, nothing like normal dusk.  

Good point about the dependency Rhiannon.  Must have scared the life out of ancient peoples who wouldn't know the sun was coming back.

I wondered how the colander suggestion would work! Years ago I remember my husband doing something with a pinhole. It's good to have the photos on the web though as well isn't it? And yes it is a strange light.  It lasts lang enough to be a bit fearful if you don't know what is happening, and doesn't occur often enough to be expected.

I remember reading a good fable about the jungle animals reaction to an eclipse. Must hunt it out again!
