Border Town

Not much English
spoken here
in St. Jacques,
New Brunswick

my high school French
declares slowly
at first, then more
easily-

"Du lait, du pain et
du gateau,
s'il vous plait."

Listening patiently,
the grocer packs it all
in a used paper bag,
then sends me off

with a smile.
