Guardian angel

 

Everywhere that you wander

I trail not far behind

Although you cannot see me

I’m always by your side

I’d do anything to protect you

I’ve saved you countless times

You’re unaware of all the near-misses

I’ve helped you to survive

 

You say you don’t believe in miracles

And I have to roll my eyes

How can one be so oblivious

Of all the times I’ve saved their life?

Sometimes I hide your car keys

And of course, that makes you mad

But you don’t know that on those days

I’ve helped you to avoid a crash

I help you to make choices

When you’re unsure of what to do

When you have a gut feeling

It’s ‘cause I whispered it to you

Quite often you don’t listen

I shake my head in disbelief

But foolish choices and all,

I want to keep you safe with me

 

I’m with you watching shows and films

Seen your favourite countless times

I know every word off by heart by now

And the parts that make you smile

I sometimes ask you questions

When I’m confused about the plot

Then remember you can’t hear me

So engrossed that I forgot

 

I celebrate when you’re winning

I cheer you on at your best

I’m with you in your darkest nights

That feel the loneliest

And when you feel alone

I wish you'd know that that's not true

For it has been the greatest honour

Guiding and shielding you  

You complain about how your life

Never seems to go to plan

I wonder why you don’t recall

All the times it has

You say that no one cares for you

And no one ever will

I walk away and clench my fists

As my eyes begin to fill

 

I bend over backwards for you,

I shield you, run and dive

Do you not think I care for you?

Has it all been a waste of my time?

I guess my work is done here

I know when I’m not wanted

Good luck because you’re the clumsiest

And your ungratefulness I’m done with!

I turn to take one last look at you

To find you looking in my direction

You felt my presence leave

Now you feel vulnerable and helpless

You felt the energy shift

You were safe, but now exposed

It feels strange because protection

Is all you’ve ever known

 

I wonder if I’m visible

As you look in disbelief

But then you look around aimlessly

As you whisper out “don’t leave”

 

Finally, you see me

But not through any sense you’ve known

Not with your eyes, ears or touch

You feel me in your soul

Now it all makes sense to you

Every near-miss, chance and "fluke",

You realise that through it all

It was I that protected you

 

And that everywhere you wander

I’ll trail not far behind

And although you cannot see me

I’m always by your side.
