under blue oil-paint canal,
smiling young lover

vomit and vomit
pale beside stomach writhing,
ambulance, E.R.

familiar old doc
tells me I'm sick as hell hound,
spectacled and concerned

new hospital where
I'm shot up with medicine
that can't kill the pain

strange nervous tremors,
first unconscious surgeries
glad to be first world

improvement is slow,
broken up by pain and mad
medical routines

gradually, safety
returns, always welcome like
