Contradictory upbringing
Strange,
We’re taught to: Dream!
And told to check reality…
Shoot for the stars, abound!
But keep your feet on the ground…
Take great risks, forget the Pounds!
Remember, interest, it compounds…
Write them all down,
Every goal you desire!
Remember to have insurance:
Terror, death, theft, fire.
Give it your everything,
Let nothing stand in your way!
Remember, it’s important
To earn and pay your own way.
Don’t fear anything at all,
Be a brave pilot!
But avoid cancer, violence,
Germs and the HIV virus.
Which do you believe?
How do you survive?
When all the world’s messages
Are bi-polarly awry…

Too true Shannan. Love this kind of poem. I enjoyed more than just the subect matter; the glib tone comes across really well and I was smiling at the irony of it all along with you.
