My Favourite Things

Day-beds, and sleigh-beds, and forks fit for toasting,
pans so your chestnuts could get a good roasting,
tables that doubled as sewing machines
once I considered – collectable things.
Of a Sunday –
rubbed the silver –
made it gleam and shine…
in a couple of days needed cleaning again,
all such a waste of time.
Hall clocks, and wall clocks, and Westminster chimers,
ran kind of slow, but not bad for old-timers,
piles of old postcards all trussed up with string,
seems I gave house room to any old thing.
Of a Friday –
scoured the junk-shops –
Camden Lock – my patch,
bent on collecting collectable things
buying a load of tat.
Armchairs that pleaded the need for some stuffing,
leather settees in a dire need of dubbing,
bedsteads with knobs on, and rusty old springs
must have been mental to harbor such things.
Every weekend –
Antiques Road-show –
punters by the score…
clamored to cash-in the family silver
so prices went through…
the floor.
Warming-pans, whatnots, luminiferous lustres,
fed-up of flicking with old feather-dusters,
stick them on E-bay and spend what they bring
but not on collecting collectable things.
Every Sunday –
do a boot-fair –
be it rain or shine…
when my load of rubbish
is some moron’s treasure,
the pleasure is more
than mine!

Good fun and I like how it fits the original tune. Things, stuff, clutter, our lives are full of it. Hope you do well at the boot fair, Tina.

I loved this Tina,
you're interpretation of that song was so original and put a smile on my face too.
I could just picture a house full to brimming with all those collectable items.
Wonderful.

Don't worry Tina, I'm exactly the same, but I do find it hard to let go, especially if they hold sentimental value...I'm embarrassed to say my attic is full of boxes of stuff that never sees the light of day. Will never part with any of it.
Jenny.
