"John, you are just too much! Do you even bother about Melissa's
future?" Janice shouted in dismay. John countered back in fury, "What
about you? You are not even concerned about her health!" That was all
Melissa heard as she cried herself to sleep.
The next morning, Melissa's eyes were red and swollen as she reached
school. Her best friends, Eliza and Amanda, noticed the sadness and
despair in her eyes. They asked in unison, "What happened?" Melissa
told them the whole sad story.
"Yesterday, my father was retrenched and came home agitated. My mother
added his worry as she complained about money problems. I do not blame
her, as her monthly salary is only about a thousand dollars. My father
was angry at my mother's obvious dismay and they quarrelled the whole
of last night! It was very terrible to lie in bed, hearing your parents
quarrel!" Having blurted out her sad story, she burst into tears.
While Eliza and Amanda comforted her, she continued in a sobbing
voice, "They are going to file for a divorce today, I guess I will have
to stay with either one of them? but I love them both!" Eliza said,
"You have to choose wisely?" "As whoever you choose will affect your
future," continued Amanda. Having being calmed down, Melissa had a
clearer thought of the situation. Thinking hard, she makes her
decision?
Just as she expected, her parents came to school earlier than usual.
"We have filed for a divorce and it is now confirmed," her mother
started awkwardly. "Who do you want to stay with? You can choose who
you want to be with," added her father looking at the ground. Melissa
made a sudden movement. "We are very sorry for not telling you
earlier," added her mother quickly. But Melissa was not angry or sad;
instead she was calm and serene. She said with a steady voice, "I'll
stay with Mom if I can spend the weekends with Dad." It was settled
then, her fate and destiny.
